The Federal State Unitarian Enterprise Scientific Research Institute the Scientific Industrial Association “Luch” was formed on the basis of an experimental facility of the State Institute of the Rare-Metal Industry, which was set up in 1946 and later, in the 1960s, transformed into a scientific research Institute.
This Institute developed high-temperature materials, nuclear fuel, fuel elements and active zones for nuclear rocket engines working at temperatures above 3,0000 K. “Topaz-2”, a space thermionic nuclear power plant converting thermal energy of a nuclear reactor into electric one was designed there, as well as new fuel elements based on microfuel for different nuclear reactors. New technologies of molybdenum, tungsten and silicon carbide were developed in the field of metal optics.
Today, the FSUE SRI SIA “Luch” manufactures temperature-sensitive elements, produces single crystal silicon with high purity, homogeneity and temperature parameters from silicon carbide, develops heat accumulators on the basis of phase transition of eutectic alloys, manufactures powerful X-ray tubes for tomographs and metallohydride cooler-heaters which are ecologically cleaner than freon ones, and develops electrical accumulators based on sulphur and sodium, as well as lithium power supply sources.
